Dr. Ray Nicholson dead at 87

A funeral is planned Tuesday for an Evansville man known affectionately as “Dr. Nick.”

Dr. Ray Nicholson was the longest active member of the medical staff at the former St. Mary’s Medical Center, now St. Vincent Hospital.

Nicholson entered private practice in Evansville in 1958.

He was founder and director of the Family Practice Residency Program at St. Mary's from 1970 to 2007, where he taught and mentored more than 200 physicians.

Nicholson’s obituary states he was the longest serving director of a family medicine program in the country, and he delivered more than 3,000 babies in his career.

He also served as medical director of the Muscular Dystrophy Clinic in Evansville from 2001 to 2011 and as a board member of WNIN.

Nicholson’s funeral is set for 10:00 Tuesday morning at Our Savior Lutheran Church, with burial to follow in the Lutheran Cemetery.
