Convention hotel project dead, for now

It’s back to the drawing board for a convention hotel in Downtown Evansville.

Mayor Lloyd Winnecke has announced that the city’s deal with developer HCW has fallen through.

Old National Bank President Bob Jones told a news conference at the local labor temple that the bank is unable to come up with $6.5 million in private sector funding. But he says the bank is still committed to a new convention hotel.

Winnecke says he’s “disappointed but not defeated.” He says the city will work hard to re-start the process of getting a hotel built.

Indiana University Trustee Pat Shoulders says the delay in the hotel project will not affect the nearby IU medical school project.
