Construction bids awarded for baseball/softball complex

Ground will be broken soon for what was once a controversial sports complex.

The Evansville Convention & Visitors Commission has awarded two bids for the $14 million baseball-softball facility that will be installed next to the Goebel Soccer Complex on North Green River Road.

The commission awarded a more than $5 million contract to Empire Contractors, and a $6.4 million contract to Blankenberger Brothers.

Officials say a ground breaking will be scheduled in the next two weeks with construction to begin as soon as possible. The complex should be completed by spring of 2015, in time for the Indiana Amateur Softball Association Men’s Softball Tournament.

The eight-field baseball/softball complex was originally planned for the Roberts Stadium site, but a public outcry forced officials to change the location.

The local Innkeepers Tax will pay for the new sports complex, and tourism officials say events at the ball fields will pump millions of dollars into the local economy.
