City Council wants power to limit fireworks

Are Fourth of July fireworks still exploding in your neighborhood? If so, the Evansville City Council wants to do something about it.

The council has approved a resolution calling for fireworks rules to be determined by local governments, not the state.

Council Vice President Dan Adams sponsored the resolution. He told the Evansville Courier and Press that city officials should take the advice of state Sen. Vaneta Becker, who suggested sending the resolution to the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns and Association for Indiana Counties.

Networking through those groups, Adams says, is the best way to – quote -- “generate political dust in the air to effect change.”

The state law’s time period for legal fireworks runs from 5 p.m. to two hours after sunset from June 29 through July 9; 10 a.m. to midnight on the Fourth of July; and from 10 a.m. Dec. 31 to 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day.

The City Council’s resolution calls for fewer fireworks days around Independence Day.
