City Council approves bond for Silver Birch Apartments

The Evansville City Council has given the go-ahead for an assisted living housing complex.

The City Council unanimously approved a $17 million bond for the $23 million apartments to be built by Chicago-based Vermillion Development.

The city has no obligation to the bond, but the deal gives the developer a better tax rate and a tax-exempt bond.

The Silver Birch apartments will be a three-story, 119-unit apartment complex near Governor and Canal streets – at the site of the old Erie Homes.

City Councilwoman Michelle Mercer, who is also a nurse, welcomed the project.

She said it addresses a need for low and middle income residents, and the 119 units will fill up.

Residents must have a medical need to live at Silver Birch.

Officials say certified medical staff will be on hand around the clock and the facility will provide all meals.

They hope to break ground on the complex in September and open by the end of 2018.
