APC considering streamlining proposal

The Area Plan Commission has announced a proposal to streamline rezonings, subdivisions, variances, and special use permits.

Area Plan Commission Executive Director Ron London said it currently takes about 90 days from the time a rezoning petition is filed with the APC for the proposal to be considered by the Evansville City Council or Vanderburgh County Commissioners for a final vote.

He said the proposal would reduce the timeframe to about 42 days.

The proposal would also shorten the time it takes for subdivision reviews from 60 to about 30 days.

And London said variances and special use permits that go before the Board of Zoning Appeals would be reduced from 45 to about 30 days.

The planning commission has also initiated a discussion to consider a request by London to review and update the City and County zoning and subdivision codes for the first time in nearly 50 years.

In a news release, London said updating the zoning ordinance would enhance efforts for more development in urban areas hit hard by blight, without requiring multiple variances and special use permits.
